Metrorex officially introduced mobile payment in Romania

Metrorex, a subway operator in Romanian capital Bucharest, is pioneering with mobile technology in the metro transport industry.

The new system of access into the subway stations was tested last year, being considered reliable after it processed over 10,000 validations in over seven pilot stations. The service is based on the data-over-voice technology from Margento, which ensures the transfer of messages between the point of sale and the center for processing.

Orange and Vodafone customers can pay a Metro ride by sending an SMS to the short number 1700, receiving immediate payment confirmation, all by SMS. Also, they can opt for buying 2 or 10 trips, sending text 2C or 10C to short number 1700. Access to the station is conducted by calling the free phone number 1700 and tap it against Margento vPOS validators installed in subway stations, in the access platform.
